Glen Affric is described by many as the most beautiful glen in Scotland. The glen covers a vast area of around 30 miles in length from just outside Cannich to Kintail in the west. As an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Glen Affric has attracted a large number of visitors over the years and we can certainly see why! It offers a number of breathtaking views of Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin and Loch Affric, not to mention the beautiful Caledonian Forests surrounding them.
There are many walking and cycling routes through and around the glen, including the Affric Kintail Way, which is popular among hikers and mountain bikers, which actually runs from Loch Ness to Morvich, covering somewhat 44 miles.
There is only one public access road to Glen Affric, which can be accessed from Cannich village. This road is a single track road with passing places and we encourage all our guests to drive carefully when visiting the reserve. Along the road, which streches to around 10 miles, there are 3 car parks. One at Dog Falls, one at Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhoin and one at the end of the road, by the River Affric. At each of these parking areas, there are detailed information signs about walkways and wildlife you may be able to spot during your visit, as well as well signposted walks and picnic tables for you to stop for some lunch!
Did you know that the Caledonian Forest is recognised as a unique Scottish habitat? Unfortunately, it has previously been used for mass timber extraction and has seen a huge decline in the woodland, and the wildlife that came with the territory.
Rewilding Europe (non-profit) and Trees for Life (charity) are working together on a huge restoration project in order to restore the forest to its former glory. The project will see hundreds of thousands of trees planted and habitats protected, encouraging the natural wildlife to thrive as it once did.
